Entire books were written about how to write efficient code to draw graphics. There were no drawing APIs to call, if you wanted something to appear on the screen (whether it be a pixel, a character, a line, a circle, a sprite, etc) you would write the code to move the bytes into the right places in display RAM. Instead, graphics cards, at least in DOS land, all had memory mapped display RAM, and extensive documentation was available about exactly how setting various bits in display RAM would affect the pixels that appeared on the screen. There was the concept of a Video BIOS, which were extensions to the INT 10h BIOS video services, that were effectively limited to initialization and switching video modes. Early graphics cards had virtually no callable code associated with them at all, the concept of 'drivers' had not quite become a reality yet. And with DX12, it is very likely that users can keep using their DX11 graphics card (depending on what it is), all what they need is a new OS.Did every programmer of every game implemented all possible various API's that old graphic cards supported?

Exception to that would be Vista because I think with a service pack update DX10 was upgraded to DX11. With DX, a new OS (and graphic card if it is unable to support the newest DX) every few years. But no need for a new OS (exception Vista DX10 to DX11)

So to me it seems, staying up to date with OpenGL will cost you a new graphic card every year, if the current graphic card can't support the new spec (unless the company that made the card is choosing to not update the driver to support the new spec and are trying to force people to buy the newest one). If it turns out that it can't, then keeping up to date with OpenGL will be very costly for users compared to DX12, which there is only a release every few years with a new OS.

Just looked it up and I see the performance issues of DX11, but I don't know if DX12 is really a dead end when it hasn't even been released yet and how people will react to Windows 10 (so far I have heard that people (on this forum) like 10).ДЄs for OpenGL keeping that up to date seems like a better decision for SCS since they are working with Windows, Linux, and Mac, but there is a new OpenGL Specification every year, and I don't know if a graphic card that is said to work with 4.3 will work with 4.5. Then again, maybe SCS will not have to update to DX12 (even though I would like to see what DX12 can do), if I understood correctly what DX11.3 is supposed to be able to do. But would this help increase framerate within cities or is it something related to just the game engine?ДЄnd finally, with OpenGL, can a graphic card like the R9 290 that is said to support OpenGL 4.3 (then I read about something elsewhere about it supporting 4.4 as well, not in below link), could its driver be updated to support OpenGL 4.5?

I personally would be willing to pay to have such support added to the game. Or would we have to wait till future games? And how hard will it be to add fallback support? Is it possible for SCS to add DX 12 or OpenGL 4.5 to ETS2 or ATS? It seems that OpenGL will maintain reverse compatiablity so there may not be a problem there for older graphic cards (I don't really know). Since these API's are now focusing on efficiency, if SCS were ever to update to only DX 12 or OpenGL 4.5 (if they can) would the current game or future games be reverse compatible with older graphics cards that don't support the new API?
